Spectacular Cozumel Ironman 12/04/2011
On Sunday Cozumel's most important sporting event of the year began with between 2,300 and 2,500 competitors (final number forthcoming). The Ford Ironman Triathlon is an event that consists of three stages: swimming, biking and running, and has prizes upwards of $750,000.
Also at stake were 50 places in the Ironman World competition to be held next year in Kona, Hawaii. These tickets are distributed among the participants in the Elite category which is the first to start the 226 miles journey and the holders of the best times. Swimming started at 6:40 am at Chankanaab Park and consists of 3.8 miles. Next was 180 miles on bicycles and then the 42 kilometer marathon ended in front of City Hall. Fifteen Cozumeleños competed wearing white, orange and blue uniforms. After long months of stunted average hotel occupancy, Thanksgiving, Ironman and the Riviera Maya Jazz Festival have boosted occupancy to 85%.
Men's Race Results
The last North American Ironman event for 2011 is in the books. A little over 2,300 athletes lined up for the Ironman Cozumel this Sunday morning 11/27/11. The men’s pro field presented a lot of talent in this third year of the Cozumel race. Defending champ Andy Potts wasn’t here, but the runner-up from last year, Michael Lovato, was back. Also competing were Oscar Galindez and Olympic silver medalist Stephan Vuckovic as well as Ironman Louisville champ Chris McDonald and Ironman St. George champ Mathias Hecht which were all heavy favorites.
The strong ocean current in Chankanaab National Park put the pro field to the test. Brazilian pro Luiz Francisco Ferreira led the men out of the water, posting a 45:33 split for the 2.4 mile swim. Brandon Marsh was close behind with a 45:36. Hecht posted a 45:37 for the stage, making him third into T1.
The 112 mile bike ride at Cozumel is a flat, three lap course along the coastline. While hills aren’t a problem here, the wind historically has been an issue. Hecht took the lead early and retained it near the end of the stage when Lovato and Christian Ritter passed him. Lovato recorded a 4:29:44 split for the bike ride. Ritter had a 4:33:05 split and Hecht had a 4:32:55 split. Officially, Ritter was 2 seconds off the lead and Hecht was 7 seconds off the lead going into T2.
The 26.2 mile run in Cozumel is also a three lap stage. Lovato hit the run with a slim lead and he traded the lead with Ritter and Horst Reichel at different points in the run. 70.3 Muskoka champ Lovato made his move in the third lap while the two Germans began to falter. Michael Lovato won the 2011 Ironman Cozumel with an overall time of 8:23:52. His split for the run was 3:01:41.
